Dance And self-expression

I am Dee, a 19 year-old dancer from Kariunga, home of The Leo Project.  I began dancing at a young age and my continued practice has landed me a professional position as a teacher and crew member with 111 Dance Academy, based in Nairobi.  Dancing makes me feel energized, strong, and full of life. When I dance, the movement and music take hold of me, making me full of feeling and peaceful all at once.

When young dancers are given mentorship and opportunities to practice their art, it supports the development of their confidence.  Dance sparks the mind by enabling creativity and building self-esteem.  Physically, dance promotes flexibility, coordination, balance, and increases range of motion.  Moreover, as children develop their physical strength and stamina, they are entertained by the freedom and excitement of movement.  Dance can also function as a form of communication when dancers use their movement to send messages.  Instead of relying on verbal expression, dancers can tell a story or convey emotions without words.  As in my experience, dancing can provide job opportunities through schools, churches, and event organizers.

The Leo Project is supporting creative kids and local artists by providing creative sessions in drawing, painting, dance, and music as well as offering a platform for local artists to share their talents.  Young artists can discover themselves and grow their abilities when they receive inspiration from their peers and community members.  I would like to see The Leo Project continue its effort to promote the creative minds of our community.
